Driving on the busy roads of Delaware County can be challenging enough when avoiding vehicles with drivers who either don’t know what they are doing or have had a momentary lapse in judgment. But when you add some not-so-tuned in pedestrians to the equation, it can make a drive all the more interesting.I’ve seen several near misses of cars nearly hitting pedestrians in recent weeks. One lady from Upper Chichester called and said she nearly hit skateboarders who were in the road which just happened to be the highly traveled Chichester Avenue. Upper Chichester Police Chief Thomas Bush said that hasn’t been a regular issue for his department, but did mention it just takes one moment of poor judgment for a similar situation to become a tragedy. That nearly happened on South Avenue at the railroad tracks near Acme one weekend evening. It was dark and I noticed the line of traffic in front of me hitting the brakes a little harder than normal. It turns out a group of teens, or very young adults, had been walking the tracks and just assumed traffic would stop like it does for a train. Luckily, no one was hit or hurt, thanks to some alert driving. But it’s not just young pedestrians who treat traffic as a nuisance in the midst of a shortcut. One rush-hour evening on MacDade Boulevard, a middle-age woman walked in front of traffic, about 50 yards away from a crosswalk, just staring at the oncoming drivers as if they had the audacity to be on the road she was walking on.So, the only real advice for drivers here is to never assume pedestrians will see you or stop for you even if they do see you. And it’s the same for pedestrians: Never assume drivers are going to stop, even if it means waiting at the crosswalk a couple of extra seconds. You can never be too sure.Summer DaysYes, we know those summer days and summer nights are gone for now, but they will eventually return. And for those of you who travel Route 322 into New Jersey as a way to reach the beach, there is a bit of good news in the midst of winter. The Route 322 bypass was opened through Mullica Hill, N.J.Hopefully, that will be a time saver for those of you who have become accustomed to sitting in traffic in downtown Mullica Hill. Continued…
